Guide to measuring hair dye and developer correctly

Why accurate measurement matters

Measuring the exact amount of color and developer avoids three common problems: running out mid-application (uneven results), wasting product (increased costs), and altering the chemical ratio (unpredictable results). Precise measurement saves money and improves outcomes.

How hair density affects the amount

Hair density is the most overlooked factor when calculating quantity. Fine hair needs up to 25% less product, while very thick hair may require 50% more. Do not confuse density (hairs per cm2) with texture (thickness of each strand): both influence the amount needed.

Special services: highlights, toner and correction

Each service requires a different amount. Partial highlights use less product because they only cover sections. Toner uses less because it is applied on pre-lightened hair (the open cuticle absorbs faster). Color corrections need more product to ensure complete saturation and effective neutralization.

Mixing ratios by brand

Wella Koleston Perfect 1:1 Permanent
Wella Color Touch 1:2 Demi
Schwarzkopf Igora Royal 1:1 Permanent
Schwarzkopf Igora Vibrance 1:1 Demi
L'Oreal Majirel 1:1.5 Permanent
L'Oreal Dia Light / Richesse 1:1.5 Demi

Everything you need to know before getting started

For a full color on short hair with normal density, you need approximately 30 grams (about 1 oz) of color. For roots only, around 12 grams is enough. Adjust for density: fine hair needs less, thick hair may need up to 45 grams.
It depends on your brand's mixing ratio. With 1:1 (Wella Koleston, Igora Royal), use equal amounts. With 1:1.5 (L'Oreal Majirel), for every 60g of color you need 90ml of developer. With 1:2 (Color Touch), you need double: 60g color + 120ml developer.
A standard tube contains 60 grams (about 2 oz). For short hair or roots, half a tube (30g) is usually enough. For medium hair, one full tube. For long hair, you will need 1.5 to 2 tubes depending on density.
It is always better to have slightly too much. Running out of mixture mid-application can cause uneven results and areas without coverage. The calculator already includes an adequate margin to prevent this.
Yes. Partial highlights need approximately 50% of the product you would use for full color. Full highlights need about 70%. A toner application afterwards needs around 60% of a full color amount.
This calculator gives you a basic quantity estimate. Blendsor analyzes 70+ hair variables (specific brand, color history, porosity, texture, hair condition) and generates the exact formula with precise grams adapted to your products.
